Interesting: Cost of Freedom Project (RHoK Philly)

An interesting project out of the Random Hacks of Kindness event in Philadelphia last weekend called ā€œCost of Freedom Projectā€

The project tracks the cost of the government identification required to acquire a free Voter ID.

The app is the work of a group of journalists who are making the case that identification requirements in some states are a de facto poll tax. Poll taxes were outlawed during the 1960s as Jim Crow laws were challenged by the US federal government.

This project raises an interesting question – are the costs of government identification a potential barrier to lower-income voters in Canada?
